A Home Based Veggie Garden

This is another project I love to sink my teeth into. I'm all about sustainability and learning how to make use of everything we grow and purchase. Since moving up to Hervey Bay I've started to take the time to find out about the weather and what does and doesn't grow well here. We're on very sandy soil as well so some raised garden beds will be my go I think. I've just started very small at the moment in some pots as I'm still trying to map out in the yard where my garden beds will go. I've planted Cos Lettuce, Rocket, Basil, Marjoram, Parsley and Mint and recently put in another pot of Basil Mint (so delicious) and some capsicums.

I'm also discovering about how to set up the garden beds with soil, organic matter and mulch and also companion planting as well. Finding sites to supply me with what grows best in my climate at certain times of the year and to also grow things that I love to eat versus what is good to grow. How many times have we done that? It grows well but we don't really eat that much of what we have produced.

Gardening is very beneficial for our health. It helps support our mental clarity, supplies some movement to our day, can reduce anxiety, creates a sense of community (if you start a community garden), helps to build relationships at home and gives you a purpose every day to tend to your patch. There's the opportunities to start learning about the soil, water, wind, shade, mulching, worm farming and composting. You can sign up for workshops in your local area as well and it's fab to know where your food is coming from and you know how it is grown too - organically!

It's a good all rounder I reckon!
