Are Greens Important?

Let’s explore the benefits of these powerhouse foods.  They’re low in calories but packed with nutrients.  How often do you add them into your meals? From a lettuce leaf in your sandwich to some green veggies at night, how many are you eating each and every day?

Want to find out how you can add more into your day?

  • Make leafy greens a main staple in your meals - salads, stir frys eg; kale, spinach, rocket

  • Start your day with a green smoothie by adding some spinach/kale, you may not even notice that they are in there.

  • Add some greens to your soups and curries at the end of your cook when you’re getting ready to serve.  This will help to maintain their colour and nutrients.

  • Use greens instead of wraps eg; cabbage/lettuce leaves - so yummy packed full of delicious fillings.

  • Blend some greens into your dips such as hommus.

  • I love making kale chips especially when I buy a big bunch at the markets and these taste great added to salads just before you eat.  Crunchy and tasty.

  •  You can make some sauerkraut or kimchi - such wonderful benefits of fermented foods.

  • Add them into desserts… zucchini slice!

Most Australians fall short of the recommended intake which is 25-30g of fibre every day. I’ve included this article from Dietitians Australia to help explain fibre and it’s benefits.  It also shows a typical day’s menu of getting 28g of fibre.

“According to the last National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, we get around 22 grams of fibre a day, which is better than the United States and the United Kingdom but still below the level where researchers saw the most benefit.  It’s essential to prioritise wholegrain or high-fibre foods to improve our overall dietary intake”.

Go forth and eat more greens… your body will thank you for them!
