How can we navigate this whilst keeping our health and wellness our #1 priority?
Tis the season to be jolly… at our work parties, bbq’s, catch ups with family and friends, long lunches, picnics etc. The temptation to overindulge is huge as we let our hair down for the holiday season that is upon us. The foods we consume at this time of the year all seem to hover around alcohol and lots of rich meals and desserts. I believe we all have choices and it’s up to us how much we want this time of the year to affect our health and wellness. We need to find a way to be strong and respect our body and understand what it needs and what it doesn’t. Listening to our body and in particular, knowing when to stop, have a break from food and drinks that stress our system and rest our gut, mind and body. Listening to what our body needs instead of what our body wants is a real game changer here.
Can we make the healthier choices and still enjoy the things we only eat sometimes? Absolutely! We need to change our mindset when it comes to this time of the year and not look at it as I’m 100% going to gorge on all the things I have deprived myself of all year. We can have the things we love to eat and drink and also be mindful to make healthier choices most of the time.
Making sure we put some time aside to move our bodies is really important. It is also good for our minds as well to help us get through this crazy time of the year. If you are taking a break over the holiday period find some movement that involves the scenery around you eg; a walk along the beach, a twilight bush walk, some snorkeling or stand-up paddle boarding.
I know this is a hard one and for some it is impossible but really worth a try.
We all know that alcohol is going to be consumed. It’s such a good idea to have at least 4 alcohol free days per week. When we are out and about try the glass of water in between each drink and opt for drinks lower in sugar. I love to add lots of ice cubes and some fruit to my drinks as alcohol is full of calories and is nutrient poor. Try switching in some flavoured soda waters with some fruit as well to give your body a break. I call these my ‘mocktail’ and to be honest I feel like I’m having a wine because my mind believes that I am. I’m amazed at how easy this has become for me.
We can get through this period reasonably unscathed if you’re prepared to give some of these tips a go! Trust me… your body will thank you for it in the long run and you will feel really proud of yourself that you gave your wellness your priority.
Here’s to a very merry Christmas and a wholesome New Year!
Much love
xxx
