Should we wash our fruit and veggies?

It can be something we don’t think we need to do, time consuming to have to wash our produce but I found some good reasons to make this a part of your food prep routine.

I follow the Food Revolution Network and here’s the summary for the article:

SUMMARY: Although fresh fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest foods for you, conventional agriculture often uses chemical pesticides that may linger on your produce. In this article, get proven tips on how to wash vegetables and fruits, so you can protect your health and your family.

Now that I follow a wholefood plant-based way of living I want to honour the produce that I buy and I want to honour the bodies that I feed at my house. I have been growing my own small variety of fruits and veggies and I have found keeping the nutrients up to the plants and deterring the pests a real challenge at times. I can see how mass supply of produce for farmers depends on the quality and keeping pests at bay is really important to their business. I buy my produce from Box Divvy and supplies are at least 70% from local organic growers and conventional growers when needed. The produce is grown spray/chemical free, bio-dynamically, organic and with no packaging which is very sustainable. Organic fruit and veg can still be sprayed with natural and allowed pesticides so that was something I didn’t know a lot about. I will also wash my produce as I use it so that it is free of dirt and bugs and won’t spoil in the fridge or the fruit bowl if I wash it all at once when I get them home. I do find my produce lasts longer too if I wash it as I use it. Now my health and that of my family is important to me so washing all my produce is something I don’t think twice about. I haven’t ventured down the path of buying special washing agents but I have used the bi-carb soda soaking and using vinegar as well. Sometimes the good old under running water with a scrub with my veggie brush is pretty good too.
