Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

Aaaah the journey of self discovery. This is one area in my personal growth that has been challenging me. One that I love to make sure I do but as I’m getting older it is getting harder. Since starting the menopause transition I have noticed things that would not normally worry me - they worry me now! I am constantly wanting to push myself to learn new things, experience new things and to meet new people along the way.
I recently was asked to speak on wellness at a day yoga retreat centred around International Yoga Day with the theme being holistic wellbeing and environmental harmony. I jumped at the idea and the opportunity but a niggling voice on my shoulder was saying “maybe this is a no” “maybe you don’t have time to do this”. I couldn’t believe that I was hearing this because as I said, things that would normally not worry me… this was turning into one of them.
I took a deep breath and told myself that it would be good for me and that I would feel truly amazing afterwards. But the time between being asked and the actual event seemed like a lifetime. I’ve played in many a softball grand final and going for gold in state championships and masters tournaments and yes, the nerves are there but never like this. Will people like me? Will they find the session boring? What if I stuff up completely?
Well I’m happy to report that the day was a huge success and my wellness session went so well. I drove home with a smile from ear to ear.
Stepping outside of our comfort zone challenges us to adapt to new situations and to develop new skills. Some skills we never knew we had. I learnt a lot about myself and found that other facilitators on the day were questioning their own abilities as well. It allows us to build the confidence and resilience to handle any future stressors that may come our way.
What will take you out of your comfort zone?
