The Beauty of Friendship

I’m writing this at a time when I have come back home to visit and spend some time with mum whilst she is recovering from a knee replacement. I have also spent time with childhood friends that still remain today and I love that we have that strong connection. I have also watched mum after losing dad 4 years ago, build some beautiful relationships with her lifelong friends as well as stepping out of her comfort zone and developing new ones in her community groups that she has become a part of. I have definitely seen the coming together when someone needs support - a visit and check-in, an offer to do the shopping, to pick her up and drive her to appointments. The networking that goes on to make things happen and you know that simple act of a cup of tea and a chat… you can’t put a price on that!
I love the sense of that feeling of belonging. Belonging to a community of like-minded people who are together for a reason. The sharing of knowledge as we all have our own individual stories and experiences to tell and these can help others on their journeys. The sense of purpose when we wake every morning knowing that there are people in your court ready to spring into the day with you.
Being part of a walking/exercise group, a social group, a historic lovers group, regular yoga/gym classes, the Bowling Club or other sporting activities, Book Club, Sewing Circle, Coffee Club, Men’s Shed - you get it…. Being a part of something again gets us out of bed in the morning with a spring in our step. Sharing laughs, stories, sorrows- so good for our mental wellbeing.
Our personal growth will sprout from these experiences. We can be exposed to so many new things that sparks our curiosity to learn more, do more, see more, be more! I love what social connection does for us. Less isolation and loneliness occurs and the feeling that you matter to others… so important to our wellness and our health.
What will you get up to with your friends?
