I'm back writing about this topic as I am going through this very thing right now in real time! I was having a Facetime session with my girlfriends a few weeks ago and we got onto this topic. One thing we did take away from our get together was to keep the conversations happening. To keep talking about our experiences and you know what? I'm lucky because I can have a good laugh with my girlfriends as well. There has to be some form of humour to this all don't you reckon?
One thing I have really noticed, and I was a bit ignorant there for a while because I didn't think it would happen to me now, but getting to know your body during this time is really important as it does help you acknowledge the symptoms you are experiencing which then leads to you being able to address these with your doctor if you are concerned about what these could all mean for you and your future health outcomes.
I didn't know that the declining hormones that we once had thriving around inside of us could lead to so many issues in vital organs and that some can have long-term effects. How important these hormones are to sustaining our bodies through everything and then when you go through menopause... poof!! they're going or gone. Heart disease, muscle aches and pains, vaginal dryness, bladder issues, restless legs, insomnia, dizziness, skin elasticity and dryness... I'm sorry to say but there are so many symptoms that each and every one of us can experience. I was truly blown away.
I have read a couple of books recently 'The New Menopause' by Dr Mary Claire Haver and 'The M Word' by Dr Ginni Mansberg and let me tell you they were and are a fab source of information and they really did open my eyes.
We need to talk to our girlfriends who are around the same age, our mums, grandmas, sisters etc etc and ask the questions so we can find out more and offer that support as well. We are not alone and every female on this planet is going to go through this at some stage. I do love that there are more conversations opening, more celebrities taking up the challenge to talk about it and open up about this on social media etc etc.
